Anti-American I guess

I was listening to CNBC and CNN on XM last night and good fucking grief Americans love the smell of their own shit. So many “we are the shining light of the world, the best democracy, what will the world do now?”

A lot of us will just keep living our free lives, you fucking assholes*.

(Them, not you, dear reader.)

re: Anti-American I guess

@tewha The fact that so many people there actually believes that explains a lot about what is happening there.

Pro-American I guess

@tewha You have free lives because America had nukes. And before that because we shot the English when nobody else would.

Someone must've done an alt-history of no American Revolution, but it'd be a bleak English bootheel world. Without us, there'd be only monarchies and dictatorships.

America's a fuckup country a lot of the time, like now, but we still do set the tone for the rest of the world, which is why the GOP administration years have been so bad.

Pro-American I guess

@mdhughes @tewha nukes? Against USSR? I bet USSR wouldn't even have developed nuke arsenal without US having one.

As a reminder USSR used over 70% of GDP to deter US threat. Without that threat, those resources would have been used internally.

No, USSR wasn't friendly, good neighbours or nice in any way but I really don't think they really would have pursued nor accomplished world domination without US & American nukes.

Pro-American I guess

@nemeciii @tewha Have… have you not read any history of the 20th Century? The Soviets were fully militarized and expansionist, Stalin killed tens of millions of their own & conquered citizens even before WWII, and immediately after invaded past their borders, it was called the Iron Curtain. And it was Hell there.

And before that, it was the Germans/Austrians. Before the Germans/Austrians, it was all the European colonial powers and the damned English.

Pro-American I guess

@mdhughes @tewha yeah I have we share common border with Russians and fought against them twice during WWII and still remained independent.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finlan

Pro-American I guess

@mdhughes @tewha The British Empire abolished slavery over 30 years before the US.

Pro-American I guess

@alsoknownas @tewha The English abolished it because they wanted to hurt the Dutch economically, they never did anything for ethical reasons. And "abolished slavery" may come as some surprise to the Indians, who weren't free of the English until 1947.

The US is not a single monolithic place. The free states abolished slavery in 1794-1807, but the slave/Confederate states we had to shoot to make them stop 60 years later.

History books are a thing. You should read one.

Anti-American I guess

@tewha yup, Ive been saying for years that nationalism is the first step to bring your country absolutely down, but I was always shunned.
No matter how bad your country will do, with nationalism you are save because hey you are the best, no matter what, isnt it?

I mean we had the same In Germany back then, no matter how terrible things were. "We are fine because we are proud[...]".
There are many other examples for today but dare to criticise the nationalism.

Anti-American I guess

@tewha that last line applies to most of my posts

Anti-American I guess

@tewha Your first mistake was listening to CNBC and CNN

Anti-American I guess

@tewha Maybe it's a case of deep down, they know they're not free, but if they say it enough, maybe they'll be able to convince themselves?

(all this "land of the free" gets on my goat too, but then I'm not American).

re: Anti-American I guess

@tewha as a non-american, if I had to decide on a "shining light of the world" or the "best democracy" I'd point at New Zealand or somewhere Scandinavian

it's been like this as long as I remember

re: Anti-American I guess

@izaya @tewha switzerland is also a choice

re: Anti-American I guess

@jeder @tewha too militarised for my tastes, but I suppose it is

re: Anti-American I guess

@izaya @jeder @tewha the swiss military have not much to say in politics. even if, in the end everything has to pass by the votes of the swiss citizens.

i do agree tho that swiss military thing sucks, not only in eating up budget, but also in forcing ppl into the army, just to do nothing at all.

re: Anti-American I guess

@izaya @tewha name a single other country with freedom of speech

re: Anti-American I guess

@fluffy @tewha now that you mention it, I can't think of any countries with true freedom of speech at all.

re: Anti-American I guess

@izaya @tewha hm, i guess the usa has had some reform about that in the last decade or so.

times sure have changed. you get more freedom from places with loose policing these days than with protected speech.

re: Anti-American I guess

@lucky @izaya @tewha most european countries enforce political and/or historic speech. for example in germany you can't dispute certain ww2 history statements, in russia you can't insult the president, etc.

Not sure about their speech/expression laws in general, but they seem not to have hate speech laws.

re: Anti-American I guess

@lucky @izaya @tewha does the usa have hate speech laws now?

re: Anti-American I guess

@fluffy @izaya @tewha
>name a single other country with freedom of speech
is what you sad
I suggested Estonia was a candidate, and hate speech is usually the differentiator between countries like the US and other democracies.
I never suggested the US had hate speech laws. You are putting words in my mouth.

re: Anti-American I guess

@lucky @izaya @tewha ah, it is a miscommunication. i was referring to speech restrictions about history/politics, like i described before.

as far as i am aware hate speech laws are quite uncommon, so it would have made no sense for me to ask for examples of those when I knew there already were many.

re: Anti-American I guess

@tewha yet you are literally listening to our news and commenting on it daily - interdasting :thinkin:

re: Anti-American I guess

@a7 Your replies are not welcome.

re: Anti-American I guess

@tewha cool story bro

re: Anti-American I guess

@tewha those are the media pundits/personalities putting on a show and moral display/outrage telling their viewers who lap up being told what good and smart people they are and how evil the others are

re: Anti-American I guess

@colonelj Yup. People eat it up.

Anti-American I guess

@tewha Haha...

I'd like to admit to some irony here. I've been observing what's been going on in the States for just over a year now, and on and off even before that. I'm not American though. I don't even live in America.

I'm a Canadian watching horrible shit unfold and I just find it all so shameful.

The events of today also lead me to not want to use social media or at least not Twitter (I don't have Facebook).

re: Anti-American I guess

@tewha just a couple days or so ago, i read from rami ismail (dutch/egyptian video game dev) that just now he realised when americans talk about freedom, a free society, rights, etc., more often than not they believe this ambition to be unique in the world – as if most other countries weren’t built on more or less the same general ideal, and weren’t about trying to realise that for their citizens.

that’s both a bit terrifying, and also explains a lot.

Anti-American I guess

@tewha Things are so, so fucked right now. It's amazing how ignorant people are.

Every neoliberal out there is on nothing but a constant fucking ego trip, the Democrat-Republican rivalry is like if the Joker and the Penguin were constantly arguing over which one of them is the villain.

The left is a shadow of its former self and not even taken seriously anymore. We need to group together again and get shit fucking done like we used to.

Anti-American I guess

@giraffekey @tewha
And this time we should seriously unite across borders as well. Global forces are too strong to stand against in any one single country. We've seen what happens a country tries to reinstate public ownership of any significant natural resource (oil or lithium for example).

Anti-American I guess

@sacredbirdman @tewha
Yeah, you would think that since America is the center of attention and the most fucked we should prioritize it but that would actually be anti-progressive and further enforce centralization. We may need to change the rest of the world before we can change America.

Anti-American I guess

@tewha US media and government is full of themselves and full of shit

Anti-American I guess

@tewha sad but true....
